Bio: Dr Vinay P. Namboodiri is a faculty member in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at IIT Kanpur. Previously he worked at Bell Labs Antwerp, been a Postdoctoral Fellow in KU Leuven with Prof. Luc Van Gool and obtained a Ph.D. while being guided by Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri. He is interested in research in Computer Vision and Machine Learning and specifically interested in the areas of research like Visual Recognition with Scarce Supervision, Language and Vision, Human Motion Analysis, Analysis of Sketches




Abstract:

Bio: Rahul Ghosh is a Senior Research Scientist at American Express Big Data Labs, Bangalore, India. He manages the Cloud and Platforms group within Big Data Labs to drive machine learning at scale across Amex. Before joining Amex, Rahul worked at Xerox Research Center in Bangalore, India, at IBM Software Group in North Carolina, USA and at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in New York, USA. Rahul’s broad research interests are the areas of Cloud computing, performance and reliability analysis, stochastic modelling and operational analytics. He has co-authored 30+ research papers in top tier venues including IEEE CLOUD, IEEE DSN, ICSOC. He is also a co-inventor of 10+ granted US patents with 20 pending patents. Rahul received his Masters and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Duke University, North Carolina, USA.

Abstract: Blockchain based systems are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Originally, Blockchain came to lime light with the introduction of a crypto currency called Bitcoin. However, over the years, the scope and importance of Blockchain surpassed than that of a mere of crypto currency. The purpose of this tutorial is to get the audience excited about Blockchain so that they can drive a meaningful conversation. Three broad topics will be covered: (i) setup, (ii) landscape and (iii) opportunity. In the setup, we will start with the basics of Blockchain including its fascinating origin. We will then move to Blockchain landscape to understand the use-cases, platforms and the standardization efforts. Finally, in the opportunity part, we will connect Blockchain with other technology areas, e.g., Cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) to see the potential research opportunities.
